Jordan's Queen Rania Joins Save the Children Symposium on Middle East Youth |
The event, "The Promise of Youth, Supporting Education and Economic Opportunities in Jordan and the Middle East," was sponsored by Save the Children and its New York City Leadership Council. Proceeds from the event will support the organization's work in Jordan and the region.
The program featured a panel discussion moderated by ABC News commentator Cokie Roberts, a member of Save the Children's Board of Trustees. Panel members included actor and humanitarian Richard Gere, Dr. Isobel Coleman, senior fellow of U.S. foreign policy at the Council on Foreign Relations; and Dennis Walto, Save the Children country director in Jordan and Lebanon.
The panelists shared their views and experiences on how education and economic development can promote peace and prosperity in societies by offering all people -- and especially youth -- opportunities for impacting their community and country. Following the discussion, the panelists participated in a question and answer session with the audience.
Save the Children has been working in the Middle East since 1953 and in Jordan since 1985 and has a long history of initiating and sustaining effective development programs that benefit children and youth. Save the Children recently launched two new youth initiatives, NASEEJ and NAJAH, under the patronage of Their Majesties King Abdullah II and Queen Rania. The Queen attended the launch of the programs in Amman last October, and King Abdullah has met with Save the Children leaders to convey his personal support.
The event was underwritten by Saraya Jordan. "Saraya's support of initiatives that positively engage today's youth as tomorrow's leaders in their communities are in line with the late King Hussein's belief that 'Jordan's most precious asset is its people'," said Mr. Ali Kolaghassi, Vice Chairman and CEO, Saraya. "Saraya's support of Save the Children is in keeping with our objective of promoting and sustaining growth in order to achieve a better standard of living for the people of Jordan."
"Save the Children is honored that Queen Rania and our distinguished panelists were able to join us on Sunday," said Save the Children President and CEO Charles MacCormack. "Save the Children has a unique opportunity to engage with youth in Jordan and elsewhere in the Middle East. With more than 60 percent of the region's population under the age of 24, we recognize the importance of assisting youth in getting the education and training they need."
