Children in Save the Children U.S. Programs Appear to be Safe Following Hurricane Katrina
Westport, CT (August 30, 2005)–Save the Children partners in rural southern communities report no injuries among sponsored children – and only minor damages to school facilities – as a result of Hurricane Katrina, one of the most devastating storms to hit the South in history.
“The good news is that it appears that the thousands of sponsored children we serve in rural communities in Mississippi, Arkansas, South Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky are safe, although at least two facilities where we conduct after-school programs have suffered some water damage,” said Mark Shriver, Vice President and Managing Director of U.S. Programs for Save the Children.
Save the Children will assist its rural community partners in recovering from the storm.
“While we are tremendously grateful that the children we serve and our program partners are safe, our thoughts and prayers today go out to the hundreds of thousands of families and children affected by this devastating storm,” Shriver added.
