The New York City Leadership Council

The Save the Children Leadership Council of New York City was founded in 2003 as a new generation of active, concerned volunteers eager to raise awareness and funds to support Save the Children’s programs domestically and throughout the world. Since then, the New York City Council has donated half a million dollars to Save the Children’s operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Sudan, as well as their Tsunami relief effort throughout Southeast Asia, their Hurricane Katrina relief effort along the Gulf Coast, and the immunization program in Uzbekistan. In short, the Council has had a remarkably successful first three years.

Since 2003, the New York Council has hosted two panel discussions: “Caught in Conflict: Child Protection and Survival in Afghanistan and Iraq”; and “Children of Sudan: Origins of Conflict, Faces of Survival,” at the Colony Club in New York City. The Council hosted a gala cocktail party at the Explorer’s Club to highlight Save the Children’s Delegates Program. Delegates are volunteers who travel to a Save the Children program where they spend several days living and working with Save the Children staff and the people they are helping. In December of 2005, the Council quickly organized a wonderfully successful art auction at the home of Board Secretary, Alexandra Galston Murray on behalf of Save the Children’s Hurricane Katrina relief work. The Council also helped coordinate an anonymous $250,000 donation to Save the Children’s Tsunami Relief fund.

The New York City Leadership Council of Save the Children started as a devoted, small group of volunteers whose mission was to promote and financially support the exceptional programs of Save the Children. The Council is growing quickly in strength and numbers and this will allow the group to produce more cultural and politically informative events. For more information about membership, please contact Elle Russell, Coordinator of Volunteer Councils and Delegations.
