Jennifer Garner Joins Save the Children's U.S. Efforts to Advocate for America's Youngest Jennifer Garner, actor, advocate and mother of two, recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to help launch Save the Children's State of the World’s Mothers' 2009 report. While in D.C., Jennifer also met with key leaders on Capitol Hill to request support for early childhood education funding nationwide, and to share stories from her visit this past March to see Save the Children’s early childhood programs in California’s Central Valley. Emmy Award-winning actor America Ferrera, star of ABC's popular show "Ugly Betty", took a trip to the Navajo Nation in April as Save the Children's Artist Ambassador. Ferrera cheered on mothers and children in Chinle, AZ who are involved in Save the Children's early childhood development programs. Miley Cyrus Shows Clay County She Cares In March, Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus — accompanied by her father, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus — made a surprise visit to Big Creek Elementary School in Clay County, Kentucky, where Save the Children supports school literacy and early childhood programs. Miley hails from Tennessee and was particularly interested in our work in Appalachia. Miley and her Dad spent time with students and staff at the school and even visited the home of one lucky family. Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson Are American Idols American Idol judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson cheered on efforts to improve literacy skills, nutrition and physical activity at Goshen Elementary School in central California, in March. Paula proved that exercise is fun when she led students in a dance routine in the school cafeteria. The stars showed clips from their trip, and Save the Children’s work with children in the U.S., on American Idol Gives Back, on April 9th. For a second consecutive year, Save the Children was selected as one of the non-profit organizations to benefit from the Emmy Award-winning charity event on FOX. Ann Curry Soars for Save the Children Today Show News Anchor Ann Curry has gone to extremes to help children in need. On December 17, 2007, Ann bungee jumped live on the NBC Today show, from the Transporter Bridge outside of London, England to raise money for Save the Children. Watch the video of Ann Curry's jump. In less than two weeks, Ann's challenge raised more than $12,000 for Save the Children and The United Way. The event was part of the week long Today Show Gets Extreme campaign, during which the anchors took on daring challenges for their favorite charities. Ben Affleck Sheds Light on Congo Crisis Academy Award-winning actor and director Ben Affleck visited in May 2008 with former child soldiers as part of Save the Children's global Rewrite the Future campaign. The campaign helps provide quality education to children in conflict-affected countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Not on Our Watch Aids Survivors in Myanmar On May 13, 2008, Not on Our Watch, an organization headed by George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, Jerry Weintraub and David Pressman, announced a $250,000 challenge grant to Save the Children for Myanmar cyclone relief and recovery efforts. It was matched by other donors less than a week after the challenge was made. In addition to the challenge grant, Not On Our Watch provided a $250,000 donation to Save the Children's Myanmar cyclone relief fund. The combined $500,000 donation will allow Save the Children to expand its relief and recovery efforts in Myanmar and distribute more food, water and essential non-food items.
Five for Fighting Asks Fans to Make a Difference Five for Fighting musician, John Ondrasik, launched a website of songs and videos that ask, "What kind of world do you want?" On the site, Ondrasik urges fans to raise money for charity by uploading videos that answer the question or by simply viewing the videos already on the site.
