There are so many ways a Save the Children Baby Shower can make a difference - to make others aware of the need, to create advocates for change, to raise money to save lives and to add to the growing community of mothers taking action on behalf of other mothers around the world.
It’s easy to do a little something different, and the concept is flexible enough to meet the needs and personalities of your guests. We have provided many of the shower “must haves” throughout this website. You’ll find a helpful to do list, invitations, activities, decorations, favors and more. When you make your baby shower theme – Save the Children – you create a celebration of hope that your guests will remember and from which mothers around the world will benefit.
How to Host a Save the Children Baby Shower The first steps in organizing a Save the Children Baby Shower are to learn about the “child survival” issue and to decide how you want to get involved. To help you think through the options, we suggest that you set the goals for your shower and encourage your guests to become involved in helping mothers and babies around the world. Here are just a few options to consider:
- Donate – Use the shower as a way to raise money
- Particularly if this shower is not for a first child, consider asking guests to contribute to Save the Children to provide a Better Beginning for Babies Kit for a new mother in the developing world, rather than buying or in addition to giving a gift. They can make this donation at any time – before, during or after the party. If you are going to accept donations at the party, we recommend that you provide a place for people to put their donation.
- Encourage guests to become involved in an ongoing way with child survival efforts at Save the Children.
- Gifts and Giving – Suggest a group gift or smaller gifts for the mother-to-be along with a donation
- While providing a donation may be the focus of your shower, you can still create the gift giving environment in a smaller way.
- Consider asking your guests to bring their favorite baby book, a unique t-shirt, or other necessities. Or, perhaps your guests could together buy the mother-to-be that special stroller she has been “eyeing.”
- Take Action – Use your voices to motivate large scale change
- Saving millions of children’s lives requires political leadership. Save the Children is urging the U.S. government to do more to help children Survive to 5. Having your guests take action through writing a letter to elected officials or to the local newspaper about the need to act now to reduce the disparity in child survival rates is a great way to make sure others know that this is an issue which Americans care about. A downloadable letter is provided and draft op-eds are available.
- Forward an email about what you learned to other mothers you know.
- Share – Create greater awareness
- The shower is a great chance to give your guests an opportunity to learn more about challenges other mothers face around the world. The more we know about the needs of mothers around the world and the simple health interventions that could save millions of lives, the more we can do to effect change. Let the shower be the starting point for greater education and awareness.
