Just because it's not happening here, doesn't mean it's not happening.

Time does not heal all wounds rather sometimes it sheds new light on them. Ten years ago, a friend was killed in Iraq, Salwa Oumashi (Google her). I had promised myself I would never forget, especially because the anniversary of her death appropriately falls on the UNís International Womenís Day. But I almost did forget this year, until a friend posted the video at the top of this page reminding us that just because itís not happening here, doesnít mean itís not happening. Salwa had arrived in the U.S. from Syria just 6 months before returning to Iraq, 2 months before we invaded. Both were her home. And now, both are worse than she could ever have imagined. And tonight I remembered our goodbye conversation with her at Boston Logan Airport, and I remembered my trip to Aleppo in Jan 2010, and I cried and cried.
