Save the Children Responds to Aftermath of Philippine Storm

Through the Eyes of an Evacuee – Eliginia

On December 6, 2006, Save the Children staff Ely Salazar and Ben Paul Belleza visited Barangay Padang in Legazpi City to assess the needs of evacuees whose homes were destroyed by Typhoon Durian.

In the words of one evacuee, Eliginia, "This is the strongest typhoon I've ever encountered in my entire life. We were caught by surprise by the very strong winds and the mudslide that flowed into our village. We listened to the radio about the typhoon, but we didn't expect something like this to happen." In this village alone, most of the houses were destroyed by the winds or swept away. Over 500 families found themselves without shelter, clothing and basic utensils for cooking. Even worse, many families lost loved ones, some of whom remain missing.

"At the moment, my family is staying in a single room in the evacuation center together with 11 other families." Eliginia expressed her deep appreciation for Save the Children, together with other organizations, which are providing basic essentials such as water and blankets. In addition, she emphasized her gratitude to Save the Children staff for taking the time to listen and talk with her and other evacuees, and for not treating them as mere recipients of relief. "It is important for us to be involved. We also want to take part in whatever way in the programs you intend for us."

Despite it all, Eliginia remains positive. "Durian may be successful in destroying our homes and livelihoods, but not our spirit and faith in moving on with our lives. Our community needs help, especially for our children, to help them cope and recover from this difficult experience. We are very thankful that Save the Children is here helping us, and working closely with us."
