Luz, a six year old |
Luz's Story
Luz, a quiet girl who is 6, was in the kitchen of her 3-room home on the evening of August 15th sipping tea with her parents and her grandmother, Marcelin, when the earthquake hit. Luz was scooped up by her mother as everyone ran out of the house. One of the walls of the adobe building fell on her mother and shattered the bottom half of her leg. Their home was completely destroyed, and Luz is now living in a tent in a shelter near the center of town with her grandparents. Her mother is now waiting for her leg to be operated on. Luz normally attends school but her school has been destroyed. Temporary schools have been set up, and Luz hopes to return to school very soon.

Giancarlo's Story
Giancarlo, a serious boy who is 8, lives with his mother, brother and sister. He was at home with his mother on the evening of August 15 in the bedroom of their home. His mother had just come home from work and was preparing supper, when the earthquake struck. He, his mother and younger siblings ran out of their home and into the street just before their adobe home collapsed. Giancarlo and his family are now living in a tent in a shelter area near the center of town where Save the Children is helping provide displaced families rice, cooking oil, and other basic necessities.
