WESTPORT, Conn. (April 14, 2009) — As families affected by Cyclone Nargis continue their struggle to recover from the disaster, Save the Children, one of the largest aid agencies operating in Myanmar, is focusing on getting children back to school.
Our Emergency Response
Save the Children has reached more than 560,224 children and adults and is working in 14 of the 15 most affected townships in Yangon and the Ayeyarwady Delta.
Food and Water
- Distributing food and water purification tablets; 37,896 water storage containers; 3,800 shelter kits; 4,022 hygiene kits; 145,874 mosquito nets; 419,597 yards of plastic sheeting.
Health and Nutrition
- Treating 300 children and adults daily in 2 health clinics; to date we have provided health services for some 3,700 people; and
- Training doctors; re-stocking clinics; setting up shore-based clinics.
Child Protection and Education
- Set up nearly 160 Child-Friendly Spaces in which children have been supported and cared for by trained community volunteers
- Reaching 7,200 children and 280 teachers in Yangon through 46 temporary schools;
- Delivering essential school supplies to over 90,000; and
- Repairing over 400 schools.
