Save the Children values close cooperation with its beneficiary communities. Therefore, the agency is involving beneficiaries in the physical process of retrofitting traditional homes and erecting the pre-engineered homes. The Construction Department recruits and mobilizes qualified tradesmen and casual labor from the communities, provides close supervision of their work and pays the community members for their labor.
Latifah Binti Adam, age 38, from Meunasah Tu Village, Pante Raja, is one of the selected beneficiaries assisting with the construction of the pre-engineered houses. With a son and a daughter in school and a husband recovering from a traffic accident, Latifah is currently the primary breadwinner for her household. For four months she has diligently painted pre-engineered houses. "Even though we've had to wait for our house, I'm so happy that every day I can see the progress of my house being built and even contribute to finishing my own home."
Save the Children aims to reach more beneficiaries, like Latifah, and continue supporting community construction teams.
