Global Food Crisis Puts Already Vulnerable Children at Greater Risk

Soaring prices and shortages are combining to create the worst global food crisis in 30 years!

A young boy in Nepal.
Across the globe soaring food prices — the highest since the mid-1970s — are forcing more and more of the world's poor and disadvantaged children to go hungry. The rising cost of food will force many poor families around the world to make difficult decisions on how to spend their money. Parents may have to cut back on what and how much food they can provide to their families, remove their children from school, reduce spending on health or sell key productive assets in order to cope with dire economic circumstances.

Idol Gives Back Brings Awareness and Support to Save the Children's U.S. Programs

Peyton and Eli Manning visited a school in New Orleans in support of Idol Gives Back
Save the Children was proud to be a part of this year's Idol Gives Back event on April 9th, when the needs of children in the U.S. and around the world were highlighted and people were asked to open up their hearts and wallets to help. Estimates indicate that $60 million was raised, and Save the Children’s portion will benefit U.S. Programs.

Prominent celebrities including American Idol judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul, Super Bowl winning quarterbacks (and brothers) Peyton and Eli Manning and teen sensation Miley Cyrus all visited Save the Children programs in different parts of the United States and urged viewers to support the agency's work.

Thanks to all of you who supported this historic philanthropic event!

CEO Charlie MacCormack with mother and child at Health Center in Ethiopia
“It's hard to believe that such a little creature can cause such big problems. But, a mosquito bite in certain parts of the world can be fatal to a baby or toddler. Malaria kills nearly 3,000 children under age 5 every day.
That's 1 million children in sub-Saharan Africa alone every year...”

Nearly a third of all recent peace agreements make no mention of education at all! As part of the five-year Rewrite the Future campaign aimed to advocate for the 37 million children out-of-school because of conflict in their countries, Save the Children has released a new report, Where Peace Begins, with the premise that education can mitigate the effects of conflict on children and help build peace in countries affected by armed conflict.
