Specify either a fixed amount or a percentage of your estate. Also remember to include Save the Children as contingent beneficiary in your will and in your retirement and life insurance programs (in the event your intended heirs predecease you). There is no limit on federal estate tax deductions for charitable contributions.
Suggested Wording for Bequests.
When including Save the Children in legal documents, please use our legal title, Save the Children Federation, Inc. Save the Children Federation, Inc. is a non-stock corporation incorporated under the laws of the State of Connecticut and is tax-exempt under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Save the Children's tax-identification number is 06-0726487.
We suggest the following wording for bequests in wills or trusts:
"I give and bequeath to Save the Children Federation, Inc., of Westport, Connecticut, ___________ (insert dollar amount, percentage of estate, or description of securities or property, etc.) to be used for its general purposes (or insert the name of a program)."
Special Note: For the greatest flexibility in responding to the needs of children in the United States and around the world, Save the Children prefers bequests to be made for our general charitable purposes. However, Save the Children also welcomes specific requests and will endeavor to carry them out. Occasionally, however, changes occur in political situations in developing countries or in program capabilities that may impact our ability to carry out specific requests. Accordingly, to enable Save the Children to use bequest funds as intended and yet accommodate unforeseen changes in program requirements, Save the Children requests that the following wording be added to any restricted bequest:
"In the event that Save the Children Federation, Inc. determines that the purpose for which this gift is made is no longer appropriate or practicable or does not require all of the funds provided, Save the Children Federation, Inc. may use said funds as in its discretion may seem most appropriate for other purposes allied to or in harmony with the spirit and purpose of this gift as described above."
Eglantyne Jebb Society
The Eglantyne Jebb Society is our honorary society, named for the visionary woman who founded the international Save the Children movement. It was established to recognize and honor donors who have included Save the Children in their estate and gift plans. Please inform us when you have made such plans so that your name may be added to the Society.
