Bolivia: Emergency Relief
Save the Children team delivers emergency supplies to the Mercedario II Community in the City of El Alto following the flooding of homes in this section of the city. |
Unusually heavy rains associated with the La Niña weather pattern began the 15th of December 2007 and intensified in mid-January 2008. Flooding has now impacted five of Bolivia's nine departments: Cochabamaba, Santa Cruz, Beni La Paz, Chuquisaca impacting nearly 60,000 families. Additional damages have been reported in Tarija and Pando. Current weather prognostics are not positive; according to the National Weather Service, rains are expected to continue until late February and many rivers are already at flood level. Approximately 18,000 people are currently living in shelters or have fled their homes due to flooding.
Save the Children is providing medicine, blankets, mattresses, food rations and jerry cans to communities in Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, and La Paz to benefit 2385 people with an immediate response.
