Primary Education
Our goal is to help children develop competencies and life skills by improving primary education in elementary schools in Oruro, where Save the Children works with 20 of the 60 state or public schools, impacting 15,000 children. We address the educational needs of girls and boys and also include teachers and parents in our initiatives. Additionally, Save the Children developed and implemented a program in Oruro and El Alto that trains children, youth and teachers in technology skills.

The Need
Save the Children's Technology and Education Program addresses the poverty and educational challenges facing Bolivia's children and youth by providing innovative technology training for them and their teachers. Many development and government agencies improve access to information by donating computers to schools and connecting computer-learning labs to the Internet. However, in many cases these labs are not functioning or are under-utilized because teachers and students lack sufficient training to use computers in their classrooms. The curriculum developed by Save the Children fills this important niche.

The Strategic Vision
The Technology and Education Program improves the education of children and youth in Bolivia and provides access to technology skills. Students learn the basics of operating a computer and as students advance in the curriculum, they build research skills and strengthen competencies in areas such as math, language and business. The program also includes activities for promoting social responsibility and leadership skills so that the children and youth will become stakeholders in the future of their own communities.
Currently operating in the cities of El Alto and Oruro, the Technology and Education Program plans to expand, with sufficient funding, throughout Bolivia. The Program aims to increase overall school performance of elementary students and to increase future employment opportunities for adolescents with an emphasis on valuable computer and leadership skills.

Making Decisions, Save the Children's adolescent development program, helps youth make responsible and informed decisions regarding their futures. We focus on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS education, leadership, self-esteem, communications and economic opportunities for youth through vocational orientation and education. This initiative has already benefited approximately 15,000 youth and now reaches every department in Bolivia; with funding from USAID, it will impact an additional 81,000 adolescents over the next three years.
