Philippines - Just for Kids

Click on a country to learn more

Hi there Kids! We'd like to show you a little more about the Filipino language? Here are some phrases you might like to learn:

English Filipino English Filipino
Good morning Magandang umaga No Hindi
Good afternoon Magandang hapon How much is this? Magkano ito?
Good evening Magandang gabi Why? Bakit?
Goodbye Paalam Who? Sino?
How are you? Kumusta ka? Where? Saan?
Thank you Salamat When? Kailan?
Welcome! Mabuhay Good Mabuti
Yes Oo Bad Masama

A game to try from the Philippines

Tumbang Preso:

1. Choosing who is "it":

  • Kids can choose who is "it" in a number of ways - Filipino children often rely on a simple "palms-up (or down) you're it" rule. They gather in a circle and put their hands palm down. On the count of three, everyone raises their hands and puts them down again, choosing either palms up or palms down.
  • The group with the highest number gets to go free, leaving the others to continue. Those who are left repeat the process until only three are left. The odd one out (one palm up against two palms down or one palm down against two palms up) become "it".

2. Setting up the can:

  • The child who is "it" now sets up a can (no sharp edges please) a reasonable distance away from the group. He or she must try to "defend" the can against the slippers to be thrown at it.

3. Hitting the can:

  • The other players must try to hit the can and retrieve their slippers before the "it" can set up the can again.

4. Tagging the others:

  • The "it" must try to recover the can, set it up and then tag the other players as they retrieve their slippers. The player who gets tagged is the new "it".

This game is fast, exciting and fun. We hope you'll try it.
