The Mt. Kilimanjaro Climb for Children 2004 is a fund-raising initiative for the organization’s child-focused work in Malawi and for its global mission of relief and development for children in need.

Our climbers’ remarkable African journey begins by seeing Save the Children in action. They will travel to a poor rural district in Malawi, where our innovative HIV/AIDS community mobilization program empowers villagers to care for and help support children and families most affected by HIV/AIDS. They will meet adults working side-by-side with Save the Children to build and run childcare centers and schools, make potable water and food available and organize local HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention activities.

The climbers then travel to Tanzania and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Accompanied by professional guides and porters, they will test their endurance on a six-day trek to and up the western slope of Mt. Kilimanjaro that ends with a steep ascent to the 19,340-foot summit of Africa’s highest peak. Their reports from Malawi and Mt. Kilimanjaro will be posted regularly on this website.

In addition to paying their personal travel and climbing expenses, each climber contributes or pledges to raise a minimum of $10,000 to support Save the Children’s work this year in Malawi and around the world.
