The National Father’s Day Council honored six deserving fathers for their exemplary parenthood at the 65th Annual Father of the Year awards luncheon in June in New York City. These exceptional fathers, leaders in their own right, spanned a diverse range of professions, including:
- LL Cool J
- General Michael Hagee
- Jack Klugman
- Archie Manning
- Michael Setola, president of Oxford Industries, Inc.
- Darryl Webster, community activist and Men’s Health / Father’s Day Council All Star Dad
All charitable contributions from this year’s luncheon, including generous gifts from The Sani Family Foundation, Inc. and The TJX Companies, Inc. were earmarked to support Save the Children’s Gulf Coast Hurricanes Recovery Fund. Through this fund, Save the Children is assisting boys and girls in the hardest-hit states of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi through school and community-based programs in concert with local schools, community groups and mental health professionals. Save the Children is improving the well-being of storm-affected boys and girls, and quality of life through psychosocial interventions that address immediate emotional needs; out-of-school activities that enrich and protect; and restoration and enhancement projects to improve the child care infrastructure.
The National Father's Day / Mother’s Day Council is a not-for-profit organization that strives to heighten the meaning and observance of Father's and Mother’s Day, raise funds for philanthropic purposes and present Father of the Year / Outstanding Mother Awards to mothers and fathers of high accomplishment in their chosen fields who have exhibited enormous achievement as parents. The Council, a consortium of companies in the retail industry, has donated close to $16 million over the past 25 years to charities affecting families nationwide.
“Save the Children is honored to have been chosen as the beneficiary for the 2006 National Father of the Year Awards Luncheon. The event raised over $100,000 for our work in the Gulf Coast and will help thousands of children and families impacted by Hurricane Katrina. We are very proud to be associated with the event, which celebrates and promotes fatherhood, and grateful to the National Father’s Day Committee for their support”, says Mark Shriver, Vice President and Managing Director, U.S. Programs.
