The Credit Suisse Group Foundation Commits $2 Million to Build Schools in Indonesia

(January-2006) The Credit Suisse Group Foundation has donated $2 million to Save the Children for the reconstruction of nine schools in Indonesia's Aceh province. More than 1,200 schools – 22 percent of all schools in the region – were damaged or destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami of December 2004 and a subsequent earthquake in March 2005.

Adil, 11, returns to school for the first time since the tsunami. Schools opened in Band Aceh exactly one month after the tsunami. Save the Children is working with the department of education to ensure that children have the books and materials they need to continue with their education.

Renato Fassbind, Chairman of the Credit Suisse Group Foundation and Chief  Financial Officer of Credit Suisse, says: "As part of our tsunami relief activities, the Credit Suisse Group Foundation is committed to helping with the long-term reconstruction of the affected areas. Save the Children's long history in Indonesia and our mutual commitment to education made them an ideal partner. While the nine schools that Save the Children is constructing with our donation in Aceh will have a direct impact on 2,500 students, we anticipate that the long-term impact will go beyond these students and positively affect the lives of countless others in the region."

Save the Children is deeply grateful to the Credit Suisse Group Foundation for its commitment to making lasting, real change in the lives of children in need.
