Rewrite the Future: Overview

Over 72 million children are growing up today without an education. Over 40 million children are out of school in areas affected by war and conflict. Millions more living in conflict-affected countries are receiving a substandard education.

Education is often among the first casualties during conflict. Schools close, teachers flee or are recruited into the military, and school systems are no longer funded. Yet if children could continue to go to school, it would increase their chances of surviving conflict.

Schools are vital in protecting children and supporting their emotional and social development by giving them comfort, security and opportunity. The routine of school develops a sense of normalcy and the environment is one in which children are allowed to be children.

At school, children can begin the process of recovering from trauma and grief, and voice their feelings without fear. Properly trained teachers can lead the process of identifying and supporting vulnerable children who are at immediate risk of harm.

Providing children with an education also plays an integral part in building long-term peace and prosperity. The legacy of properly resourced schools with well-trained teachers and appropriate curricula is a generation of young people with the skills for employment, and equipped with the knowledge they need to reduce the chances of conflict happening again. Rewrite the Future is a challenge to the world to ensure that the millions of children unable to attend school because of war or conflict get access to quality education.

Save the Children aims to:
  • Ensure quality education for 8 million children: access to education for 3 million children and improved quality of education for these children and 5 million more.
  • Work to make schools safe environments for protecting children affected by conflict.
  • Influence national governments and international agencies to prioritize education at the onset of an emergency.
  • Increase public and private funding for quality education for conflict-affected countries.
Since starting the Rewrite the Future campaign, Save the Children has assisted over ten million children in more than 20 countries and put the issue of education for children in communities affected by war on the world's agenda.
