Babies in Malawi and Bangladesh will be a lot warmer next year thanks to thousands of knitters and crocheters in the United States who participated in Save the Children's Caps to the Capital project. Save the Children will deliver baby caps to both countries after stopping first in Washington, DC, in January, to present personal notes to President Bush from Americans expressing their concern for the health and well-being of newborn babies worldwide.
Both countries were chosen to receive caps because of the high rate of newborn deaths in each country each year. Save the Children also has extensive child health programs in Bangladesh and Malawi through which the caps will be distributed to mothers and newborn babies who need them.
A few caps were taken to each country this past October to help Save the Children begin the process for bringing the caps through customs in February. One of the first caps delivered to Bangladesh was given to a newborn baby girl whose twin sister died at birth (see photo at right.)
